HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 23-year-old Hutchinson man was arrested on multiple charges including attempted second degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with a Tuesday afternoon incident where a woman was injured.

Hutchinson Police Captain Dayton Gates said officers from multiple agencies were called out at 4:15 PM to the area of 17th and Plum on a reported domestic disturbance with an armed subject. The victim was located at Kwik Shop, where she was evaluated by Reno County EMS and taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A perimeter was established at a nearby residence where Damon Cantu was thought to be located. After officers tried to contact the suspect and received no response, Reno County SWAT team members responded and also attempted to make contact, giving multiple command and opportunities to cooperate with law enforcement, which were also unsuccessful.

Ultimately SWAT team members made entry into the residence, where during a search Cantu was located and taken into custody. He was transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility where he was booked in on a $400,000 bond pending an initial court appearance.

In addition to the attempted murder and kidnapping charges, other requested charges against Cantu include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and by strangulation, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threat, felony interference with law enforcement, endangerment, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

The case remains under investigation, and Captain Gates said anyone with information on the incident can report it via Reno County Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS or via the P3Tips app, text RENOKS to 738477 for a link to an anonymous tip form or call Hutchinson Police at 620-694-2816.
