HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Fire Department is gearing up for its annual school supply drive, aiming to support students in every school across Reno County. With nearly a decade of tradition behind it, this event has become a cornerstone for giving back to the local community.
Donating is simple. From July 24th to 26th, look for the big red fire trucks and uniformed firefighters outside Walmart and Dillon’s locations on 30th and 5th in Hutchinson. As Jerry Dowling, fire inspector for the department, suggests, “The big thing is treat it like you were going shopping for your own kids”. Pick up an extra pack of paper or pencils as you shop and hand them over to the firefighters and volunteers outside.
Once supplies are collected, volunteers will work to count and sort everything. “It usually takes about five or six of us two or three days to go through it and make sure that we have a proper count for everything,” Jerry Dowling explained. The supplies are then divided evenly and distributed to all 32 schools in the county.
