HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Clinic is actively responding to a recent development involving Kroger pharmacy operations, in which three Hutchinson Clinic providers have been restricted from prescribing controlled substances that can be filled at affiliated pharmacies, including Dillons Pharmacy locations.

Late last week and over the weekend, patients of the affected providers received letters from Dillons Pharmacy indicating that their controlled substance prescriptions would no longer be filled. Hutchinson Clinic was not notified in advance of this decision and became aware of the situation on Monday following patient inquiries.

“We have serious concerns regarding both the decision and the manner in which it was communicated,” said clinic leadership. “This action has the potential to significantly impact patient care, safety, and continuity of treatment.”

Since learning of the issue, Hutchinson Clinic has taken immediate steps to address the situation and minimize disruption for patients. These efforts include providing comprehensive documentation to Kroger outlining the clinic’s opioid prescribing policies, as well as the safeguards in place to ensure appropriate and responsible prescribing practices. Clinic staff are also working directly with patients affected by the change to support continuity of care.

Hutchinson Clinic emphasized that it has consistently collaborated with Kroger and its pharmacy operations to adhere to all applicable policies and regulatory standards related to controlled substance prescribing.

The clinic’s pain management department has long been recognized for its rigorous procedures and commitment to patient safety. Leadership expressed concern that the recent actions may undermine patient trust and negatively affect the reputations of providers who have demonstrated a strong commitment to responsible care.

“Our priority remains clear: to support our patients and providers while minimizing any disruption to treatment,” the statement continued.

Hutchinson Clinic is committed to supporting our patients through this situation, with patient safety and continuity of care guiding every action we take.
