Neosho County Community College secured its place in the KJCCC Conference Tournament Final with a dramatic 2–1 overtime victory over Kansas City Kansas Community College, completing a hard-fought comeback in a fiercely contested semifinal encounter in Chanute.
The visitors made the stronger start in what developed into a highly transitional opening half, with both sides finding opportunities to attack as possession changed hands frequently. KCKCC capitalized on its early momentum to take a 1–0 lead, leaving the Panthers chasing the game heading into halftime.
The interval provided Neosho with an opportunity to regroup, reassess and establish greater control of a contest that had been played at a relentless pace.
As has become a familiar theme throughout the Panthers’ impressive campaign, the response after the break was emphatic.
Neosho emerged for the second half with renewed intensity and purpose, significantly increasing the tempo of the game and applying sustained pressure on the visiting side. KCKCC struggled to replicate its first-half effectiveness as the Panthers began to dictate larger periods of play.
The pressure eventually paid off when Keane Hazeldine found the equalizer, bringing Neosho level at 1–1 and setting up a tense conclusion to the contest.
Despite Neosho’s second-half dominance, KCKCC remained dangerous and threatened to snatch a late winner. With just five minutes remaining in regulation, goalkeeper Shinji Okura produced two outstanding one-on-one saves to deny the visitors and keep the Panthers’ hopes alive.
With neither side able to find the decisive breakthrough before the end of regulation, the contest moved into golden-goal overtime.
The defining moment arrived during the first overtime period when Ivan Rocha produced a moment of individual brilliance. Rocha unleashed an incredible curling effort to find the back of the net, sealing a dramatic 2–1 victory and sending the Panthers into the conference tournament final.
The result capped off an intense battle between two quality sides, with Neosho demonstrating the resilience, attacking ambition and collective determination that have defined its season.
From overcoming an early deficit to Okura’s crucial late interventions and Rocha’s spectacular winner, the Panthers once again found a way to prevail when the stakes were at their highest.
