Kansas basketball is adding another player to its roster for the 2026-27 season. Purdue transfer Trey Kaufman-Renn has join the program via the transfer portal. Kaufman-Renn was a senior during the 2025-26 season but was granted a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, which makes him temporarily eligible.
KU had a roster spot open up due to a knee injury freshman Grant Mordini suffered. Per NCAA rules, Mordini remains on scholarship but his spot does not count against the House Settlement mandated roster cap because the injury happened before the season. As a result, KU had a spot to add Kaufman-Renn.
“Trey Kaufman-Renn, who had a tremendous career at Purdue, has enrolled in classes, and is practicing with us as of Sunday,” Self said in a release. “He reached the national championship game, the Elite 8 and the Sweet 16 at Purdue and has been extremely well-drilled and well-coached. Even though it’s late in the process, because of his basketball IQ, we think his transition will be quicker than most put in the same circumstance.”
The 6-foot-9 big man was an All Big 10 selection during his junior season in 2024-25. That year, he averaged 20.1 points per game while shooting 59.5% from the field. He also grabbed 6.5 rebounds and recorded 2.2 assists per game during the campaign. He wasn’t as productive scoring the ball a season ago, but he still notched 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Over the last two years, the big man averaged 17.1 points on 58.7% shooting from the field with 7.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 0.5 blocks. Kaufman-Renn spent time playing both the four and the five for Indiana. During his first three years with the program, Kaufman-Renn redshirted in 2021-22. He then served as a bench piece as a redshirt freshman before stepping into the starting lineup the following year.
Kaufman-Renn already has some family ties to KU. His cousin, Brooklynn Renn, is currently on the women’s basketball team.
