Warm Autumn temperatures make winter snow seem far away – but the City of McPherson street crew is already preparing. City crew members recently took part in the Snow Roadeo, an annual training and equipment handling event near Milford Lake and Junction City.
The Kansas Chapter of the American Public Works Association hosts the event each year. The competition challenges operators to put their skills to the test in simulated winter weather. They drive snowplows through obstacle courses, practice precise control, and handle equipment they will need when real snow falls.
This hands-on practice helps crews respond faster and safer during winter storms. It also helps operators spot any problems with their trucks before the busy winter season blows in.
