WICHITA, Kan. – Following in the footsteps of the varsity on Monday, the McPherson girls tennis team claimed the AVCTL Division III and IV title on Tuesday in Wichita.

The Bullpups took first place with 70 points overall, a max score after winning every match they played on the day.

Gwen Prieb finished her freshman season at 17-0 on the JV side after going 3-0 and winning the #2 Singles division.  Ava Miller also went 3-0 in #1 Singles and had to battle for the gold medal.  She trailed 6-1 in the championship match, but won seven straight games to take an 8-6 victory.  It was the second year in a row that Miller has been a league champion in JV singles.

On the doubles side, Audra Sandbo and Sadie Krug took the gold in #1 Doubles, going 3-0.  In the championship match, they trailed 6-5, but Sandbo had a great service game and the pair was able to turn it around and win 8-6.  Brenna Sullivan and Emily Reno went 3-0 and took first place in #2 Doubles.  They took a back-and-forth championship match 8-5 to finish the day.

The season is now finished for the Bullpups on the junior varsity side.  McPherson JV coach Ricardo Sanchez said: “The seniors that are finished playing will be greatly missed in the program, but hopefully their leadership and example will stick with the underclassmen!”
