Authorities in Salina are investigating an early morning fire that has closed a care facility for adults.
The Salina Fire Department was dispatched shortly after midnight to a reported structure fire at 401 W. Iron Avenue, also known as Sunflower Adult Day Services.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a working fire in the two-story commercial building, with a significant amount of fire showing from windows on both the first and second floors.
Fire crews immediately entered the structure to conduct fire suppression and search operations, as the second floor also serves as residential living space. Firefighters confirmed that the building’s single occupant had safely exited prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.

A subsequent search of the building confirmed there were no additional occupants inside. The fire was brought under control within approximately 15 to 20 minutes with firefighters remaining on scene to conduct overhaul operations and address remaining hot spots. Both floors of the building sustained fire damage, and significant smoke damage was present throughout the remainder of the building.
Unfortunately, the damage has temporarily prevented Sunflower Adult Day Services from continuing its daily elderly respite services, creating a significant gap for community members who rely on those services. The cause of the fire remains under investigation
