EL DORADO, Kan. – The McPherson Bullpup football team needed just four plays to find the end zone at the start of Friday night’s game at El Dorado. They went on to score six more times on their way to a 48-7 rout of the Wildcats.
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Bullpups had two quick plays that got them down to the El Dorado 10-yard-line. Two plays later, Dane Becker was into the end zone on a two-yard run to give the Bullpups a 7-0 lead. They navigated inside the El Dorado five yard line again later in the first and Becker finished the drive with a one-yard score as McPherson led 14-0 after 1 quarter.
In the second quarter, Carter Bengtson had two touchdown passes. He found Jaxon Hoover on a two-yard out to give the Bullpups a 21-0 lead, and then a 16-yard fade to Ashton Malm with 24 seconds left in the first half put them up 27-0 at the break.
Bengtson played just one half, completing 14 of 18 passes for 204 yards and the two scores. His early exit with the big lead gave way to backup Isaac Nelson, who also had a superb night. Nelson led the Bullpup offense to two third quarter touchdowns. Brody Milleson, playing for the first time since being injured in week one, finished off the first drive of the second half for the Bullpups with a two-yard touchdown run. Yurem Ordonez added a one-yard score to put McPherson up 41-0 after three quarters.
El Dorado got their lone score of the night on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Bowlin to Newell Marsh with 9:35 remaining in the game. Nelson and the Bullpups responded though, as he connected with Kinnick Anderson on a 34-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-11 to put McPherson up 48-7, which would be the final.
Nelson finished the game 7-9 for 90 yards passing, all in the second half. Also of note, Ashton Malm registered his first 100-yard receiving game as he had 103 yards on five catches with the touchdown, all of which came in the first half.
In all, McPherson had 475 yards of total offense with 294 through the air and 181 on the ground. The Bullpup defense held the Wildcats in check most of the night with the majority of their yards coming on their first and last drives of the game. El Dorado finished with 97 total yards and just 22 rushing yards for the game.
McPherson is now 4-1 on the season, while El Dorado fell to 1-4. The Bullpups are back on the road this coming Friday night at Mulvane, which is now 3-2 after a 34-9 loss to Wellington on Friday night.
