EUREKA, Kan. — Several Greenwood County Jail inmates were taken to a hospital Tuesday, Sept. 22, after a reported hazardous situation prompted an evacuation at the jail. The Greenwood County Courthouse was also evacuated while court was in session.
The Eureka Herald reported that four inmates were initially found unresponsive. Several inmates were taken to Greenwood County Hospital for evaluation and were later listed in stable condition. Inmates who did not need hospital care were transferred to the Lyon County Jail.
The cause has not been confirmed, and no gas leak had been found in the initial reports. Greenwood County Sheriff Heath Samuels told KVOE that the sheriff’s office would not release information about the incident until Monday; as of Wednesday, the office had not confirmed the reported details.
