Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College men’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Avila University on Sunday afternoon at home. The Swedes were looking to win their first conference game of the season.
Avila struck first in the 14th minute with a shot from 20 yards from goal to take an early 1-0 lead. The Swedes looked to respond but were unable to find the equalizer. Avila added another goal in the 38th minute with a cut back onto the penalty spot, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Bethany came out with increased pressure in the second half, creating several opportunities in the attacking third. The Swedes were given a chance to get back into the game when Antonio Robles won a penalty in the 60th minute, which was struck into the post by Richard Livingston. Despite having dominant spells in the second half the Swedes were unable to find a breakthrough. Bethany finished the match with 20 shots, including five on goal, and earned five corner kicks.
Avila then added a third goal in the 72nd minute to extend the lead to 3-0.
Richard Livingston led the Swedes offensively with nine shots, including two on goal. Antonio Robles recorded four shots with one on target, while Isaiah Herbst and Kisasi Brooks each tallied three shots.
In goal, Nikoloz Chitaia made four saves for Bethany.
