McPherson is updating its public offense laws, including tougher penalties for domestic battery and water theft.
The ordinance sets a minimum 48-hour jail sentence for a first domestic battery conviction. It also makes taking city water without authorization a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to five-thousand dollars.
The ordinance also clarifies that electronic cigarettes are treated the same as cigarettes under city law.
