McPHERSON, Kan. — Jacob “Jake” Perryman, APRN, of McPherson Center for Health has been named a recipient of the Kansas Hospital Association’s Heart of Health Care Award.
Perryman was recognized during the KHA Convention and Trade Show, held Sept. 10-11 in Overland Park. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, compassion and commitment to patients, colleagues, and their communities.
Perryman’s path to healthcare began following six years of service in the U.S. Army. After being wounded in combat in Iraq and receiving the Purple Heart Medal, he was medically retired from the military. His own healing journey ultimately led him to a career focused on caring for others.
He began his healthcare career as a paramedic before completing nursing school and joining McPherson Center for Health as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department. He later served as a House Supervisor, supporting staff and patients throughout the hospital. After recently completing his advanced practice registered nurse education, Perryman now provides care in the Walk-In Care Clinic and is training to support the hospitalist team.
“Jake has a unique ability to make people feel comfortable, whether it is a patient, a coworker or a student who is just beginning to explore a career in healthcare,” said Carol Fickes, Chief of Provider and Clinic Operations. “He leads by example, steps in when help is needed and genuinely cares about the people around him.”
That commitment is reflected in feedback from patients, who have recognized Perryman for taking time to listen, explain and make them feel supported. His colleagues also describe him as a calm and dependable presence who encourages teamwork and is willing to help wherever needed.
Perryman has also helped identify opportunities to improve care at McPherson Center for Health. While working as an Emergency Department nurse, he raised the possibility of using APRNs for overnight hospital coverage rather than a contracted telemedicine service. The idea led to a new care model that provides an on-site provider for patients and nursing staff while also creating significant cost savings for the organization.

From military service to paramedic, emergency nurse, House Supervisor and now APRN, Perryman’s career has remained centered on service to others.
