State lawmakers trade suits for boots at the Prairie Pavilion to learn livestock exhibition directly from youth agricultural leaders.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Saturday afternoon at the Prairie Pavilion during the 2026 Kansas State Fair featured the annual Legislative Showmanship competition, an event sponsored by the Kansas Fairgrounds and Festivals Association that brings together state lawmakers and youth agricultural leaders.
In this unique contest, 4-H and FFA members coach legislators on how to properly show a beef animal, giving elected officials hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the daily dedication required in Kansas agriculture.
Working alongside their young mentors, the lawmakers were tasked with handling halter-broken heifers and demonstrating proper show ring etiquette.
The event was judged by Monte Ball of Conklin Automotive Group, assisted by Rylee Hayes of Jacam Catalyst.
Prior to naming the winner, judge Monte Ball delivered remarks focusing on leadership, youth development, and the current state of the beef industry:
- State of the Beef Industry: Ball noted that while the beef industry is experiencing record-high prices, farmers and ranchers are simultaneously facing record-high input costs, creating a high-stress environment across the agricultural sector. He emphasized the critical need for lawmakers to understand these challenges to help ensure a secure domestic food supply.
- Value of 4-H and FFA: Ball praised the young 4-H and FFA mentors for teaching work ethic, responsibility, and animal care, calling youth agricultural programs the finest way for young people to build lifelong values.
- Redefining Leadership: Drawing on his 28 years in public education and coaching, Ball shared his perspective on true leadership. “Leadership isn’t about a title or position,” Ball remarked. “Leadership is about doing hard things, building relationships, slowing down, and asking questions.” He encouraged legislators to take time to listen to young producers and ask what agriculture needs to thrive.
Representative Brooklynne Mosley of Douglas took home top honors as the 2026 Legislative Showmanship Champion, earning her place on the traveling trophy awarded by the Kansas Fairgrounds and Festivals Association. Representative Heather Meyer earned second place in the competition.
