HESSTON, Kan. — The Hesston College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over Sterling College Wednesday night, improving to 5-0-1 on the season.
The Larks wasted little time getting on the board. After Harry Morris stopped a Sterling shot in the second minute, Hesston quickly went the other direction and Jaiden Trevelyan scored off an assist from Santiago Llanos just 2:06 into the match. The early goal proved to be the lone score of the night.
Hesston continued to create chances throughout the opening half. Llanos and Saul Pineda each forced saves before Trevelyan put another attempt on goal in the 30th minute. Llanos added another shot on target late in the half as the Larks took their 1-0 advantage into the break. Hesston outshot Sterling 10-3 in the first 45 minutes.
Sterling came out looking for the equalizer in the second half, forcing Morris to make saves in the 53rd and 55th minutes. Hesston responded with several opportunities to extend its lead. Mario Delgado hit the post in the 66th minute before Alexander Radu put a shot on goal less than a minute later.
The Larks came close to adding an insurance goal several more times down the stretch. Delgado hit the crossbar in the 79th minute, while Radu forced another save in the 84th before hitting the post in the 87th. Despite being unable to add to the lead, the Hesston defense kept Sterling off the board to secure the victory.
Hesston finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on goal compared to Sterling’s three. Trevelyan led the attack with six shots, including three on goal, while Radu recorded five shots with two on target. Llanos added three shots and the assist on the game-winning goal.
Morris played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves to record the shutout. The clean sheet was Hesston’s third consecutive shutout after scoreless performances against Tabor and Barclay.
The Larks will return to action Sunday, Sept. 13 when they host Mount Marty University at noon.
