Two magnet fishing enthusiasts exploring rural Labette County recently pulled up a collection of unexpected items, prompting them to contact law enforcement in case any of the discoveries were connected to an active investigation. Chance James of Lenapah, Oklahoma, became interested in the hobby after watching YouTube videos, while his friend Elisha Hersh says the excitement comes from never knowing what they might find.
The pair says magnet fishing requires attention to safety, property restrictions and wildlife regulations, especially when fishing from bridges or near busy roads. They also recommend bringing containers to haul away scrap metal and other debris rather than leaving it behind, which could lead to littering complaints.
Labette County Sheriff’s Office Detective John Hine says safety is a major concern when magnet fishermen recover items such as knives or guns that have been underwater for an extended period. Hine encourages anyone who finds a potentially significant item to contact local law enforcement or the sheriff’s office’s FAC unit so investigators can determine whether it may be stolen or connected to a case.
