Kansas Schools Prepare for Cell Phone Ban

Just over the horizon, a new school year awaits with new rules – a bell to bell cell phone ban.

Governor Laura Kelly signed a law last spring banning the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices during the school day.

The Governor said, “In our rapidly changing world, technology dominates our lives, and that’s why it’s essential that we reduce distractions in the classroom.”

The bill requires Kansas public schools and accredited private schools to prohibit the use of personal electronic devices during the school day on school property. These devices include, but are not limited to, cell phones, tablets, computers, watches, wireless headphones or earbuds, text messaging devices, and personal digital assistants. Students’ personal devices must be turned off and securely stored during the school day.

USD 305 recently posted a message for families on Facebook:

In accordance with Kansas House Bill 2299, Salina Public Schools’ district and school building social media accounts will no longer engage in comment-based conversations or direct messages.

As a result, our social media accounts will serve as one-way communication tools, with direct messages turned off. If you need assistance, please contact the district or your school building using the phone number or email addresses listed on our website.

USD 305 schools begin classes next week on Wednesday, August 12th.
