Nash Wray legged out a bases-loaded infield single with one out in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, and the Hutchinson Monarchs won a thriller at Hobart-Detter Field, beating the Kansas Cannons 12-11.
The Cannons rallied from three runs down in the top of the ninth, tying the game 11-11. Winning pitcher Brice Wallar came into the game with runners at second and third and one out in the top of the ninth with the Cannons having already plated two runs. But Wallar got the second out on a sacrifice fly, which scored a run, and a groundout.
The Monarchs immediately rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Michael Barham led off and was hit by a pitch. James Dagenhart came in to run for Barham, and he advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Drew Bugner walked, and Dagenhart moved to third base on another wild pitch, but was out at home after a Marcus Gradney ground ball to first base was thrown home.
Dalton Sabathe reached on an infield single to load the bases, and Wray repeated that on the next pitch, scoring Bugner.
The Monarchs belted 17 hits, including home runs from Wallar, Barham, JJ Spafford and Brady Taylor. Wallar, Spafford and Sabathe had three hits apiece.
The Monarchs improve to 15-6 overall and 14-6 in the Jayhawk Collegiate League, one game behind Great Bend, which has two games in hand.
