Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Department of Athletics announces Mickey DeVries as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach, following the resignation of Sarah Able to pursue a nearby opportunity.
“We sincerely thank Coach Sarah Able for all she has done for the women’s basketball program over the past several years,” said Dean of Athletics Laura Moreno. “Coach Sarah has made an impact in numerous ways and will continue to be a valued member of the community. We wish her well in her next venture and are now excited for Coach Mickey DeVries to step into the head coach position and continue the upward trajectory of Swedes Women’s Basketball.”
DeVries has spent the past three seasons as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach for the Swedes. He has been actively involved in player development, scouting, recruitment, and game planning. In the past three seasons, the Swedes have finished 5th, 7th, and 6th, respectively, in the very competitive Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference that sent four women’s basketball teams to the NAIA National Tournament for the 2025-26 season. During this past season, the Swedes went on a 14 of 15 conference game win streak to propel them to their top five finish. The squad returns several key players who saw significant minutes last season and is wrapping up a strong incoming recruiting class.
“I am incredibly honored for the opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program at Bethany College,” DeVries said. “I want to thank Dean of Athletics Laura Moreno, our administration, and everyone involved for their trust and belief in me to lead this program moving forward. Bethany is a special place to me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue investing in our student-athletes, campus community, and alumni. I am excited to continue growing this program with a culture centered around toughness, accountability, and togetherness.”
In addition to his coaching duties at Bethany throughout the past three years, DeVries has also served as a Resident Director in Student Affairs, worked in the Advancement Office, assisted in the Student Success Center, and contributed to the Athletic Department as a game management assistant.
“Coach DeVries has a variety of experiences that will continue to greatly benefit the women’s basketball program in his new role,” Moreno continued. “From student experience to fundraising to retention to campus life, Coach DeVries brings knowledge from many key areas of campus. His ability to build strong relationships while prioritizing honest communication is another strength. Coach DeVries is a great fit for Bethany, and we are thrilled to have him continue to lead Swedes Women’s Basketball in an expanded capacity.”
Prior to his time at Bethany, DeVries was the Head Girls Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at SkyView Academy in Highlands Ranch, Colo., from 2015-2023. He coached for 8 seasons, winning a conference championship in 2019 and district championship in 2022. He became the Assistant Athletic Director for his last two years at SkyView Academy.
Before that, DeVries worked for the Grand Rapids Drive, a G-League basketball team in Grand Rapids, Mich. While with the Drive, he assisted with basketball operations.
DeVries holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
