HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Faris Elementary School 6th Grade teacher Cassie Sturgeon makes such a big impact on her students that they don’t want to leave her class.

Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Mrs. Sturgeon as this month’s Classroom Hero Award recipient presented by Heartland Credit Union.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio honors a different educator, selected from community nominations to receive the Classroom Hero Award and a “hero” gift basket, courtesy of community partners Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors of Hutchinson, Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Hutch Putt and The Foto Cowboy.

Mrs. Sturgeon is in her 41st year of teaching. She has taught in Hutchinson for the past 33 years and for about seven years has been at Faris Elementary.

Sturgeon’s teaching career first began in her hometown of Kansas City, KS. Since then, she has taught all elementary levels except for Kindergarten.

Teaching is a “family thing” according to Sturgeon. Her dad and grandfather were both teachers and inspired her to become one herself.

When asked what she enjoys most about teaching sixth graders, Sturgeon answered, “Their sense of humor.”

“They keep me on my toes,” Sturgeon laughed. “They keep me young.”

A community member who nominated Mrs. Sturgeon for the Classroom Hero Award expressed that Sturgeon is a phenomenal and one-of-a-kind teacher who truly cares for her students.

“When a teacher talks to you about your student and gets tears in her eyes because she is so proud of the accomplishments that student has made you can see it is true care,” the nominator said. “The kids carry her in their heart for years.”

The nominator added that students like Mrs. Sturgeon so much that they come back to visit her class and want to stay in 6th grade. “She holds them accountable, but they know it is out of love and care!”

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines of our local schools. Nominations can be submitted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroomhero/
