Derek Schneider led Sterling to a perfect 28-0 season and a 2A state championship to go back to back state champions, defeating Berean Academy 59-49 in the state finals at Emporia.
The Black Bears finished as one of the most dominant teams in Kansas regardless of class, highlighted by Sports in Kansas Top 5 All-Classes selection Boston Ekart.
Sterling’s season was defined by consistency, toughness and a relentless work ethic, as the group never wavered from its approach throughout the year.
“We have a team full of guys willing to grind every day to accomplish their goals,” Schneider said. “They’ve never taken anything for granted and have worked to earn everything they’ve achieved.”
Schneider, a Sterling native, has built a powerhouse over his 17 seasons with a 275-122 record.
His impact extended beyond basketball this year, as Sterling also captured a football state championship with his brother Brent serving as head coach, making it a historic year for the program.
With a perfect season, a state title for the second straight year and a team widely regarded as one of the best in Kansas this year, Schneider’s program continues to set the standard in 2A.
