ANDALE, Kan. — The Andale/Garden Plain softball team opened up its season on Tuesday with a sweep over Winfield at the Andale High School Sports Complex.
Andale/Garden Plain rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win game one, 6-1, and completed the sweep with a 12-1 victory in game two.
In game one, both teams were scoreless through three innings before Winfield struck first in the fourth inning. Andale/Garden Plain responded with a 2-run double by Abby Durham. In the fifth, Paige Stanhope had an inside-the-park home run, followed by an RBI double by Ryin Gibbens. Rose Molitor drove in a pair in the sixth on a double.
Clare Krier pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits and had seven strikeouts. Durham went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
In game two, Andale/Garden Plain scored three in the first and never looked back. Taylor Grimes began the scoring with a bases-clearing double. In the second, Emily Eck drove in a run on a double. Andale/Garden Plain scored seven runs in the third, highlighted by a 2-run single from Durham and a 3-run home run from Rose Molitor. Winfield avoided the shutout with its lone run in the fourth. Brooklyn Sele scored the game’s final run on a passed ball in the fourth.
Grimes earned the win in the circle, going five innings, allowing one run on three hits and six strikeouts, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
Andale/Garden Plain (2-0) opens up AVCTL-IV play on Thursday at Wellington.
