The Friends of Maxwell Wildlife Refuge was formally presented a $16,414 Attraction Development Grant from Kansas Tourism Wednesday to support facility upgrades aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and expanding educational programming.
According to a celebratory post on Facebook, the grant funds will be used for key upgrades, including the addition of a concessions area and expanded storage to help with educational events and programming.
Director of the Friends of Maxwell Wildlife Refuge Trisha Smith said this investment allows The Friends of Maxwell to build on the mission of connecting people to the prairie. Smith added, “By improving our facilities, we can host more events, welcome more visitors, and continue telling the story of this unique landscape.”
These improvements are expected to increase the refuge’s capacity to host visitors and community activities throughout the year.
Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, which serves as both a conservation site and an educational resource for visitors to better understand Kansas history is located at 2565 Pueblo Road, Canton, Kan. The 2,880 acres of native tallgrass prairie offers one of the last remaining glimpses into what the Great Plains looked like prior to modern development.Â
