WICHITA, Kan. — Sterling College fell to Friends University by a score of 13-3 on Tuesday, March 3. Sterling managed to score all three of its runs in the fifth inning, while Friends capitalized with two home runs to secure the win.
The Falcons took an early lead in the first inning with Miles Hartman doubling to left field and subsequently scoring on a walk, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly, resulting in a 3-0 advantage.
Sterling remained scoreless through the second inning, while the Falcons added to their lead when Elijah Morales hit a three-run homer, expanding the lead to 6-0 by the end of the second.
The Warrior’s first breakthrough came in the fifth inning. Nehemiah House walked, followed by Imanol Ramos and Parker “Jadyn” Saxbury reaching base. Matthew Garcia delivered a key hit, doubling to right field and clearing the bases, which cut the deficit to 9-3. However, the Falcons countered with a two-run homer by Bernie Socarras, making the score 12-3 through five innings.
In the sixth, Friends added another run with a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 13-3, which held through the seventh inning, concluding the game. The Falcons secured a 13-3 victory over Sterling.
Aaron Elsasser started the game for Sterling and pitched 1 inning, allowing three earned runs on one hit, two walks, and two hit batters. Landon Snyder followed with 4 innings of relief work, conceding seven earned runs on eight hits, including two home runs, while striking out three and walking four in his outing. Zachary “Ty” Johnston pitched the final inning, surrendering one earned run on two walks and a hit batter.
Matthew Garcia led the team with three RBIs, delivering a crucial double with the bases loaded. Emmanuel Huerta Cardenas recorded a triple, marking one of the team’s few extra-base hits. Ezavien Campos contributed defensively with four assists from his position at shortstop. Imanol Ramos reached base twice, adding a hit and a walk, while also scoring a run.
Up next, the Warriors (8-12, 2-5) will continue conference play in a weekend three-game series against Avila University (6-8, 2-7) in Kansas City, Mo. Sterling will play a nine-inning game on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7 starting at noon.
