PITTSBURG – Sunday will be a day to remember for the Hutchinson Community College women’s indoor track and field team.
The Blue Dragon women’s indoor track and field team won its first ever Region 6 title Sunday at the Region 6 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Plaster Center at Pittsburg State University.
Hutchinson scored 172 points in the team standings. Cloud County and Barton tied for second with 153 points. The Blue Dragons also were first in the Jayhawk West standings.
Freshmen Mildred Rono and Xylavene Beale were crowned Region 6 champions in multiple events. Rono won the women’s 5000-meter, 3000-meter and 1-mile races. She set new Region 6 records in all three events, and broke the school record in the 1-mile and broke her own school record set earlier this season in the 5000.
Beale won the women’s shot put and weight throw. Beale had marks of 17.01 meters in the weight throw, and 15.62 meters in the shot put. Deisheline Mayers Scott finished as the region runner-up in the weight throw with a throw of 16.75 meters and took third in the women’s shot put with a mark 13.77 meters.
Sabrina McDonald came in second in the women’s 600-meter run with a time of 1:33.11, breaking her own school record by three seconds.
The Blue Dragon women’s 4×400-meter relay team broke its own school record by three seconds, finishing in fourth in finals with a time of 3:58.27. That relay team consists of Anecia Campbell, Britney – Ann Powell, Valentine Titren, and Sabrina McDonald.
The women’s distance relay shattered the school record and set a new Region 6 record. The team of Ashara Frater, Sabrina McDonald, Kimberlin Lovell, and Mildred Rono won the event with a time of 11:58.18, breaking the previous region record of 12:06.51 by Cloud County. They also broke the school record 12:27.28 with the region-winning time of 11:58.18.
Ashara Frater and Kimberlin Lovell also qualified for the NJCAA national indoor meet in the women’s 3000-meter run, Frater finished in third with a time of 10:13.62, and Lovell coming in sixth with a qualifying time of 10:39.25.
Sidney Holt surpassed the national qualifying mark in the prelims of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.65 seconds. Holt ended up finishing sixth in the finals. Britney – Ann Powell took fifth in the same event but hit the NJCAA national qualifying mark with a time of 7.66 seconds also in prelims. Anecia Campbell also hit the qualifying time in the women’s 200-meter dash, finishing third in 24.44 seconds, and also in the women’s 400-meter dash, finishing as the region runner-up with a time of 53.33 seconds.
Grace Bender took fourth in the women’s pole vault. Bender cleared a height and national qualifying mark of 3.20 meters.
In the women’s high jump, Rosa Min Poulsen finished fourth with a height of 1.52 meters.
The NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held at Washburn University’s Snead Indoor Athletic Facility on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7.
