COFFEYVILLE – The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team upset the No. 23 Coffeyville Red Ravens 74-68 Saturday at Nellis Hall.

With the win, Hutchinson improves to 13-15 on the season, and 8-14 in the Jayhawk conference. With the loss, Coffeyville drops to 18-9 overall and 12-9 in conference play.

Hutchinson sweeps Coffeyville in the season series and won its third straight game at Coffeyville. This is also the third time this season the Blue Dragons have upset an NJCAA ranked opponent on the road this season.

Hutchinson outscored Coffeyville 47-35 in the second half, trailing 33-27 at the break.

Hutchinson had two players score over 20 points. Daleron Thomas led all scorers with 23 points – his seventh 20-point game of the season – while adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Bobby Cannon had 20 points, added three 3-pointers, and six rebounds.

Every Blue Dragon that played in the game scored.

Hutchinson shot 48.3% from the floor (28 of 58), and 27.8% from beyond the arc (5 of 18).. Hutchinson won the rebounding battle 36-31. The Blue Dragons had only eight turnovers and forced 12 Red Raven turnovers, which led to Hutch scoring more off turnovers 12-4. The Dragons also outscored Coffeyville in bench points 18-13.

Coffeyville connected on 40% of its shots, going 20-for-50 from the floor. The Red Ravens also went 10-for-26 from deep. Coffeyville got to the free-throw line 27 times, connecting on 18 attempts, totalling 66.7%. Coffeyville outscored Hutch in second-chance points, 8-4.

The Red Ravens were led in scoring by Jack Sorrell with 18 points. Rashid Kuta had 15 points, and he also added six rebounds. Ulysses Webb scored 10 points, while also adding four rebounds and two assists.

In the first half, Hutchinson and Coffeyville went back and forth for the first 13 minutes. Hutchinson took a 12-9 lead off of a Dilen Miller three-point basket with 11:30 to go in the first half.

Hutchinson held the lead until the 9:09 mark when three-pointers by Sorrell and Webb gave Coffeyville a 17-14 advantage. Coffeyville reached its largest lead with 2:02 in the half, going up 31-22. A 3-pointer by Bobby Cannon and a jumper by Daleron Thomas with 24 seconds left cut the Coffeyville lead to 33-27 heading into the half.

In the second half, the Blue Dragons trailed by as much as seven until Hutchinson went on an 11-0 scoring run and Cannon hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 43-43 with 12:23 to go in the game. Hutchinson hit 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 42 seconds to lead 74-65. A Sorrell 3-pointer for Coffeyville at the buzzer made the final score 74-68.

Game Notes – Hutchinson has defeated Coffeyville three times in a row, dating back to last season. Lolo Rudolph had his 4th double-digit scoring game of the season. He has scored in double figures in back-to-back games. Daleron Thomas scored 20 points for the seventh time and scored in double-figures for the 14th time this season. Bobby Cannon had his seventh game scoring over 20 points, and the first game over 20 points since his 38-point performance against Independence on November 25th. Hutchinson is now 6-7 in road games. Hutchinson is now 5-3 against nationally ranked opponents this season. Hutchinson has now beaten Coffeyville three straight road games.
