Makalo, Sweetnam better own School Record at Ichabod Invite

TOPEKA – Two more school records fell and two national qualifiers were added on Friday by the Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team on Day 1 of the Ichabod Invitational at Washburn University.

Sprinter Kebba Makalo and thrower Joshua Sweetnam both broke their own Blue Dragon records in the 200 meters and shot put, respectively. Then high jumper Joshua Muhozi and runner Lushane Blake became the 10th and 11th national qualifiers for the 2026 NJCAA Indoor Championships in March.

Makalo won his third-straight 200-meter championship on Friday winning the Ichabod Invitational with a time of 21.05 seconds. He broke his own Blue Dragon record by .07 seconds and his current time is now No. 2 in the NJCAA this season.

Sweetnam was also an event winner for the Blue Dragons, winning the Ichabod Invitational shot put with a top distance of 57 feet, 8 1/2 inches (17.59 meters). Sweetnam broke his own Blue Dragon record by 55-6 1/2. Sweetnam is now tied for No. 2 in the nation after Friday’s performance.

Muhozi became the second Blue Dragon high jumper to qualify for nationals, joining Jahmari Clifton. Muhozi placed 10th on Friday with a clearance of 6-6 3/4 (2.00 meters).

Blake finished third in the men’s 600-yard run with a time of 1:12.77. His converted time to 600 meters of 1:20.77 is a national qualifying time and the fifth-best 600-meter time in Blue Dragon history.
