Duncan’s career high leads Dragon Women over Cowley

Katie Duncan had a career day with 28 points, and the No. 20 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team notched a 75-50 road win over over the Cowley Tigers Saturday at the William S. Scott Auditorium in Arkansas City.

With the win, Hutchinson improves to 19-5 and 14-4 in conference play. Cowley dropped to 10-13, and 6-11 in the conference.

Duncan was the star of the show for the Blue Dragons, scoring a career-high 28 points while shooting a career-best 11-for-19 from the field while also knocking down a career-best six three-pointers, three of which came in the first quarter.

Kaia Smith tied her season-high in points with 14 off the bench. Smith also set a season-high with 11 rebounds, notching her second career double-double. She also cashed in a season-best three 3-pointers.

Hutchinson shot 41.2% from the floor (28 of 68) and knocked down a season-high 13 three-pointers on 30 attempts. Hutchinson outscored Cowley in bench points 27-11, and in the paint 28-12. Hutchinson won the rebounding battle 44-37 and grabbed 13 offensive boards.

The Blue Dragons held the Tigers to just 28.8% shooting and only hitting seven 3-pointers on 30 attempts. Cowley shot 11-for-15 from the free-throw line.

The Dragons got off to a hot start in the game, making four three-pointers in the first quarter – three coming from Duncan and the other coming from freshman KaMyra Barber.

Hutchinson’s shooting never got above 40% in any remaining quarter, but the Blue Dragons were able to hold Cowley to zero field goals made in the second quarter of play. Hutchinson would take full advantage of its strong defense, going on a 15-0 scoring run over the course of the quarter.

Hutchinson never trailed in the contest, leading by as much as 29, when it was 73-44, with 2:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers were led by Yatzel Renteria in her first start of the season. Renteria went 6 of 11 from the floor and hit three 3-pointers. She was the only Tiger in double figures in the contest.

The Dragons host Dodge City to the Hutchinson Sports Arena for a top 20 matchup at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11th.

Game Notes – Katie Duncan‘s 28 points and six 3-pointers set new career-highs. Hutchinson moves to 36-25 in the all-time series against Cowley, also improving to 10-13 on the road in the series. The 25-point victory tops the largest victory by Hutchinson against Cowley in the all-time series. Kaia Smith gets her second double-double of the season.
