Southern Coffey County High School is broadening its extracurricular horizons with the launch of a new Esports program and a cooperative agreement with Colony-Crest High School that will allow SCC students to participate in baseball and softball beginning this spring.

Athletic Director Robert Dickinson shared the district’s enthusiasm for these new opportunities, stating, “We are extremely excited about the growth of our extracurricular offerings, and we are grateful to the community of Colony for supporting SCC in our efforts to provide additional athletic opportunities to our students through our cooperative agreement. We are equally excited to offer a more non-traditional extracurricular activity through Esports.”

The Esports program, led by head coach Alan Newton, marks SCC’s participation in the first sanctioned KSHSAA Esports season. Newton explained, “Currently the team consists of ten members ranging in grades 9–12. We expect skills to develop and improve greatly over the next year as we have just received our equipment a few weeks ago. Myself and assistant coach, Myranda Stoner, hope to weave this opportunity into the existing athletic programs and to provide opportunities to students who are not normally involved in athletics but could use the social interaction and increasing college scholarships provided, as this industry will only grow in the future.”

The Esports season runs through December and January.

Meanwhile, the cooperative agreement with Colony-Crest will open the door for SCC students to participate in baseball and softball, with seasons beginning in March and continuing through the end of the school year. District leaders believe the partnership will not only expand athletic opportunities but also strengthen relationships between neighboring communities.

With both traditional and non-traditional activities now available, Southern Coffey County High School looks forward to an exciting year of growth, competition, and student engagement.
