Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Athletics Department has announced that Head Coach Ayona Tharps and Assistant Coach Abi Ballantyne have both resigned from their positions.

“We thank both Coach Tharps and Coach Ballantyne for their work and service to Bethany College and the Swedes Volleyball Program,” said Dean of Athletics Laura Moreno. “We appreciate their efforts and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

Tharps has been at the helm for two years in her time with the volleyball program. During her time, the Swedes had a 15-34 overall record and a 6-20 KCAC record. This past season, Coach Tharps led her team on a four-game win streak, including a five-set thriller over Tabor College, to conclude the season with a 7-16 overall record and 4-9 KCAC record.

Abi Ballantyne has been with the Swedes’ volleyball team for the past three years. Bethany has gone 24-53 during her time with the program. Ballantyne also served in other roles for the Swedes, as an Athletics Administrative Assistant and Sports Information Assistant. Her work with game day protocols, social media management, and post-game articles were an integral part of the administration side of Swedes Athletics.

A national search for the Head Volleyball Coach position is set to begin immediately.
