Sterling fell to Kansas Wesleyan University 1-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Salina, Kan. Despite a strong defensive effort with goalkeeper recording six saves, Sterling was unable to find the back of the net. Kansas Wesleyan broke the deadlock with a goal in the second half, securing the victory.
The first half commenced with both teams seeking to establish control. Sterling’s defense, led by goalkeeper Cassidy Kelly, was tested early but remained resolute. Kelly made crucial saves against multiple Coyotes attempts, including shots by Seth Flores and Morgan Spilker.
On the offensive end, Sterling’s Michael Kyalo had a notable opportunity in the 22nd minute, but KWU’s goalkeeper Shae Wirt denied the effort. As the half drew to a close, the Coyotes struck the woodwork twice in quick succession, but Sterling held firm to keep the score tied at 0-0 as the teams headed into halftime.
The second half commenced with Sterling actively seeking to level the score. Jonathan Torres attempted to create opportunities with two shots within the first six minutes, though both were off target. Despite Sterling’s efforts to press forward, Kansas Wesleyan capitalized on their chances, with Skyler Denny scoring in the 61st minute, assisted by Gonzalo Gaubeka, to take the lead.
Sterling continued to apply pressure, with Medupe Sithole‘s shot on target forcing a save from Shae Wirt. Kelly kept Sterling in contention with key saves, including a stop against Denny in the 64th minute. However, the half concluded with Sterling unable to find the equalizer, as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Coyotes at the final whistle.
Kelly recorded six saves across both halves, conceding just one goal. Sithole contributed with one shot on goal, while Kyalo also managed a shot on target. Torres led the team in shot attempts, finishing with two shots.
