HAYS – Hutchinson Community College freshman Mildred Rono broke the Blue Dragon women’s cross country school record in a runner-up performance on Saturday at the FHSU Tiger Open at the Fort Hays State Cross Country Course.
Rono broke her own Blue Dragon 5K record by 8-plus seconds on Saturday running a time of 16:41.09. That mark broke her own record of 16:49.23 set on September 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede.
Rono just missed her third race victory of the season by 1.16 seconds, finishing second to Iowa Western’s Juliana Saket.

The Blue Dragons, ranked No. 11 in the latest USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I Rankings, didn’t post a team score on Saturday with only four runners competing.
Hutchinson did have two Top 5 performances at the Tiger Open.
Freshman Ashara Frater placed fifth with a time of 17:55.43. That time is the fifth-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon history.
Freshmen Evan Ramey placed 50th with a time of 19:42.12. Freshman Kimberlin Lovell was 55th in 19:59.06. Both of those marks are season 8K bests for Ramey and Lovell.
Colorado School of Mines won the team title with 43 points. Adams State was second with 58 points.
Next up for the Blue Dragons is the 2025 Region 6 Championship on Friday, October 24 in Colby.
