McPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden paid tribute to the four Kansas Law Enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty since June during Tuesday’s McPherson City Commission, two of which involved response to domestic violence incidents including the weekend death of Hays Police Sgt Scott Heinman.

The Kansas Highway Patrol escorts Sgt. Scott Heinman from Wichita Tuesday afternoon to Hays, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday morning at 10:30 at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Chief Golden, who last Friday became president of the Kansas Association, said these deaths have had a major impact on the officers they serve or went through training with, and stressed the ongoing training officers undergo to respond to such incidents.

Referencing the large ammunition purchases the department makes on an annual basis, Golden said domestic violence calls are the most dangerous calls law enforcement responds to, at a time when the world is so unpredictable.

Golden assumed the presidency of the KACP last week during their annual conference in Salina. A member of KACP since he became Chief of Police in 2019, Golden has served the organization as sergeant-at-arms and vice president, The association is involved in a variety of activities ranging from professional development to advocacy on a state and federal level, and providing support to departments in line of duty death situations.

KACP has other connections to the McPherson Police Department. Current executive director Dennis Shaw is a former McPherson Police Chief and was the one who hired Gordon onto the force, and Former Chief Robert McClarty is a past board member.
