In their conference opener, Bethany College edged out Sterling College 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in Lindsborg, Kan. The Swedes capitalized with a high shot count, 16 with 11 shots on goal compared to Sterling’s seven shots with six on goal. Sterling’s goalkeeper made eight saves, but Bethany’s late surge secured the victory.

The first half was marked by a defensive showcase, particularly from Sterling’s goalkeeper Bella Duckworth, who recorded several crucial saves to keep the score level at 0-0. Notably, Duckworth denied Bethany’s Ariana Hurley twice, including a key save in the 39th minute. Despite offensive efforts from Cheyenne Siler and Jessica Gautreau, whose shots were both saved by Bethany’s Marie Miera Y Mosele, Sterling was unable to find the back of the net.

The second half began with Bethany striking quickly, as Jysell Sampedro scored in the 46th minute to give the home team an early advantage The Swedes extended their lead with a goal from Lauryn Machuzak in the 69th minute. Sterling responded with persistent offensive pressure, highlighted by shots from Francesca Vilca and Makenna Monnier, both saved by Bethany’s goalkeeper. In the 83rd minute, Gautreau found the back of the net with assistance from Shayna Dale, narrowing the deficit to one goal. Despite the late push from Sterling, the match concluded with a 2-1 victory for Bethany.

Jessica Gautreau scored one goal and took three shots, with two on target for the Warriors. Shayna Dale contributed with one assist, enhancing the team’s offensive efforts. Bella Duckworth made eight saves, facing ten shots throughout the match to keep the score competitive.

With the loss the Lady Warriors move to 2-4 overall, 0-1 in conference. Up next, Sterling will travel to Bartlesville, Okla. to take on no. 10 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University (4-1-1, 1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.
