A Tescott man was honored Friday night for his rescue of a Moundridge teen July 3 at Kanopolis Lake after a boating incident that claimed the lives of her father and best friend.
Daryl Lee was presented an honorary commission from Ellsworth County Sheriff Kenny Bernard, and the Heartland Award from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
14-year-old Raegan Dalke, who Lee swam out to rescue, and her mother Lisa Dalke were part of a surprise presentation which Daryl Lee’s wife Liz was also in on and helped keep a surprise.Â
Also taking part were the EMS and fire teams from Marquette, McPherson and Great Bend, Saline County Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad, Lyons Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks personnel.
Daryl Lee swam out from near Kimball Point on the north side of the lake to help Raegan make it to shore after the boat she, her father, Jerrod Dalke, and 14-year-old friend Khloe Heim had been in floated away from where they were swimming.
The bodies of Jerrod and Khloe were recovered July 5.
