
STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – The Sterling College Warriors ran into a tough opponent as they took on the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Tuesday, Aug. 26 in their home opener. Sterling battled hard but was unable to get anything going offensively and lost 6-0 to the Drovers.
USAO struck fast and hard, with Matija Malenovic scoring their first goal at the 11:43 mark off of an assist from Thiago Fasano. Malenovic scored another goal just before the end of the first half to put the Drovers up 2-0 at halftime.
Sterling tried to answer back, doubling their shots on goal from the first half to the second, but the Drovers didn’t let up with Fasano scoring a goal of his own early in the second half. USAO extended their lead with a goal from Callum Scott off of an assist from Noah Jansing and Max Leegwater scored the final two goals for the Drovers in the final six minutes of the game.
Warrior goalie, Cassidy Kelly had his hands full with five saves out of the 11 shots on goal. Sterling ended the game with a total of nine shots compared to USAO’s 24. The Drovers also had 10 corner kicks compared to Sterling’s one.
Sterling’s Daniel Stone and Chimela Orji led the Warriors in shots with three each.
The Warriors (0-1-1) will be back in action on their home field on Thursday, Sept. 4 against Hesston College.
