McPHERSON, Kan. — In the wake of a Wichita TV station interview regarding the flood damage to the floor of the McPherson High School Roundhouse after a heavy rain event June 17th, USD 418 released a statement late Friday afternoon.

The statement said the district understands the importance of the Roundhouse for students, staff and the community, recognizes concern, and that they are diligently working with experts including the City of McPherson to investigate all contributing factors, with a goal of ensuring the long term protection of the new floor and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The district also said they are especially grateful for the efforts of custodial and maintenance teams who responded quickly and worked tirelessly to support the cleanup process, along with the work of District Activities Director Shane Backhus for coordinating alternative arrangements to ensure student athletes can continue to prepare for a successful season.

The statement closed by saying USD 418 will continue to share updates with staff, families and the broader community as they learn more.

About an inch and a half of water got onto the floor through a ground level entrance on the north side of the iconic gym in that storm, which produced over seven inches of rain in about a three hour period.
