GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The KC Iola Hormigas traveled to Garden City following a brief break after the Pecos League All-Star game, falling to the Wind 3-2 in walk-off fashion.
The first five innings were scoreless as the Hormigas’ TC Burns and the Wind’s Winn Hahnfield dueled on the mound. The Hormigas finally got on the board in the top of the 6th, leading 2-0 after a wild pitch to score Oscar Galvez and an RBI single by Anthony Castaneda.
The Wind bounced back in the 8th to get on the board following two hits, making the game 2-1. The Hormigas tried to close it out and get a major upset against a team who entered 34-7 on the season, but Garden City’s offense went hot at the right time. The inning started with a walk and a single to put the tying run at third and the winning run on base. An RBI single tied the game before an error and two strikeouts loaded the bases with two outs. Rob Morosetti for the Wind came in and singled to walk it off and beat the Hormigas 3-2.
Castaneda led the Hormigas going 3-2 with an RBI. Burns ended up with the no-decision throwing six shutout innings and four strikeouts.
The Hormigas fall to 11-24 on the season. They’ll face the Garden City Wind on the road again Fri., July 18 at 6:30 p.m.
