Bat Cats score early, often in bashing Newton

TJ Shaw belted a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs, and the Great Bend Bat Cats ran rampant over the Newton Rebels on Friday, winning 22-6 in Newton.

Great Bend scored in six of the seven innings played. The game ended after seven innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Luke Nohinek singled in the first inning, putting Great Bend on the board and the Bat Cats never trailed.

Great Bend outhit Newton 16-11, and the Bat Cats collected 10 walks.

Deacon Pomeroy and Tony Moore added homers for the Bat Cats.

Elijah Lang was the winning pitcher, giving up five runs, three of which were earned in 5 2/3 innings.

The Bat Cats improved to 12-6 overall and 11-5 in the Jayhawk Collegiate, trailing the Hutchinson Monarchs by 1 1/2 games.
