SALINA, Kan. — A shooting incident early this morning at Salina Regional Health Center’s Emergency room left an elderly man dead and prompted SRHC to activate their active shooter protocol.
Salina Police said an 87-year-old man came into the emergency room around 7 a.m. and after checking in, the man went to a waiting room, took out a handgun, and shot himself. A statement from SRHC said no patients or staff were harmed during the incident. The Emergency Room continued to operate, but patients were led in through another entrance.
1st District Congressman Tracey Mann of Salina issued a statement in the wake of the SHRC incident, saying he’s grateful no innocent bystanders were harmed or injured during the tragedy. Mann said he and his wife Audrey are covering those impacted in prayer alongside the Salina Community, and thanked staff and law enforcement who managed the situation.

SALINA, Kan. — Salina Police are investigating an incident early this morning that prompted Salina Regional Health Center to activate their active shooter protocol. The protocol was implemented in response to an incident in the hospital’s emergency room.
A statement from SRHC said no patients or staff were harmed during the incident. The Emergency Room is still accepting patients, but they are being rerouted to another area of the hospital.
SRHC President and CEO Joel Phelps said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and we are committed to supporting our staff and patients during this time. We are thankful that the SRHC team and patients were unharmed.”
The hospital is cooperating with law enforcement in this ongoing investigation.
“As always, the safety and well-being of our patients, staff and visitors remain our highest priority,” stated Phelps.
