OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (CCCTigers.com) – Today the SAC Basketball season opened up with the Preseason Coaches poll and Media Day, hosted by Jim Powers of the Sooner Athletic Conference. Coach Brad Willems and Junior Hallee Winsea were available to the Media this morning as they highlighted their team, and took questions. Wayland Baptist was selected 1st by the Coaches.
Last season, the Tigers were 5-23 overall and 1-21 in the conference. The lone conference win ended a 4 year winless SAC drought. Coach Willems returns 6 players from last year’s team including, Winsea and Denia Miller, and brings in 10 new players for this upcoming season.
Junior Hallee Winsea stated, “Preseason has been going well, I have a lot more confidence in us. I try to encourage others, always trying to push others to their full potential, because I know how difficult things are.”
“Denia Miller, shes another really big leader for us, we have brought in 10 new girls, we’re looking to play a 15 game JV Season. I’d say we have 2 or 3 big transfers, Charmaine Marshall transferred from a Division 2 in Oklahoma. Cristina Loudan from a JUCO, and then you throw that with our Soccer player is going back out Amaleigh (Mattison), so I’m really excited about where we’re heading. I just want to be able to compete, no doubt about it. We’re not Central Christian of old, we’re trying to turn over a new Leaf, we got a real nice culture going here and I don’t know how many games we’re going to win. I just want to compete in them and scare some people,” stated Coach Willems to the media.
When asked about playing against some of the best players in the country, Winsea added, “It’s really fun for me because I’m big on my basketball, I’ve always been big on basketball. I just love the competitiveness and the atmosphere around it.”
“I love coaching my girls. It’s a blast,” Coach Willems shared to close the media spot.
The Women’s Basketball team welcomes Randall University on Halloween night at 6pm to open the season, at the Ed Pyle Sports Complex. The game can also be seen on the SAC Sports Network.
