An argument that began in a car between a man and woman escalated into violence on Thursday. Police arrested a Salina man after reports of a domestic disturbance and a struggle with officers.
Shortly before midnight on September 24, officers responded to a call about a man yelling at a woman in a vehicle parked in the middle of the street in the 600 block of South 2nd Street. The vehicle left before officers arrived. Soon after, police received another call about a woman crying and being yelled at by a man in the 600 block of South 3rd Street.
When officers arrived, they saw a woman banging on an apartment door, trying to get inside. A man, later identified as Deay Joseph Balchick, 37, stood on the landing outside the apartment. As an officer approached, Balchick blocked the officer’s path and said the officer would not be speaking with her. When told to move, Balchick refused. Officers told him he was under arrest, but he resisted and was placed into custody.
The 33-year-old woman told investigators that Balchick is an acquaintance. She said they argued in the car on South 2nd Street. When she tried to get out of the vehicle, he grabbed her and forced her back inside. The argument continued after they stopped on South 3rd Street. The woman told officers that Balchick threw her to the ground, hit her, choked her, and broke her necklace.
Balchick was booked into the Saline County Jail on charges that could include, aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, kidnapping, interference with law enforcement, and property damage.
