A Salina resident lost $1,080 in a Facebook rental scam after responding to a “Houses for rent” post.
According to Police Captain Jim Feldman, the victim contacted the supposed landlord through Facebook and sent $80 for an application fee, followed by $300 and $700 for rent. The victim never visited the property and never received a phone number or address for the owner.
After some research, the victim learned which company actually owned the house. When contacted, the company confirmed the home was never listed for rent.
Scams like this have become more common as more people search for rentals online.
The Salina Police Department is urging caution when responding to online ads. Never send money electronically to someone you have not met. Always inspect a property in person before agreeing to rent. Make sure you know who you are dealing with before sharing personal information or making any payments.
If you are searching for a rental, research the property owner or management company. Police say verify that the rental is legitimate by contacting the company directly using publicly listed contact details.
If you believe you have been targeted by a rental scam, report it to police.
