Warriors Keep Season Alive with Win over Valor

STERLING, Kan. – Warrior Tennis had a bid day for their senior day celebration on Saturday, April 18, keeping their season alive with a 6-1 victory over Evangel University. The win solidifies Sterling’s spot in the KCAC Championship Tournament scheduled to start Wednesday, April 22.

The Warriors started by securing the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. Fernando Vargas and Kazuki Fukushima secured the win in a tiebreaker battle against Gabriele Renella and Angel Gomez in the No. 1 doubles match, winning 7-6. In No. 2 doubles play, Rubem Bogomoltz and Adam King took care of business, getting the 6-3 win over Emiliano Arjona and Gabriel Leal. Pedro Felipoff and Cassidy Kelly fell short in the No. 3 doubles match, as Evangel’s Alberto Moyo Puigcercos and Nathan Wilking won the match 6-1.

Felipoff quickly bounced back from the doubles loss, taking care of business in the No. 1 singles match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gomez. Vargas kept it rolling with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Renella in No. 2 singles play. King secured the win with a 6-0, 6-4 win in No. 3 singles over Moya Puigcercos while Fukushima found himself in a battle against Leal, but managed to come away with the 7-6, 6-2 win in the No. 4 singles spot. In No. 5 singles, Bogomoltz got out to an early lead, leading Arjona 3-0 before Arjona retired the match.

With the win, Sterling advances to the KCAC Championships where they will face the No. 1 seed Bethel College in Lindsborg, Kan. on Wednesday, April 22. More details about the tournament can be found here.
