SALINA, Kan. – The Sterling College Warriors’ golf team opened up their fall season at the Carmichael Cup hosted by Bethany College at the Salina Municipal Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 7-8. The course features 6,521 yards of play with a par of 70 and the tournament hosted three rounds of play with the first two rounds being played on the first day of the tournament. Despite the heat, Sterling finished fifth as a team with Tobias Tajet and Dennis Halalkic leading the Warriors, both tying for 12th and shooting two over par through three rounds.
Halalkic was the most consistent Warrior on the course in his debut with Sterling College, shooting +1 through the first two rounds and even with par on the final round. Tajet got off to a “rough” start, shooting +2 in both the first and second round of play, but bounced back in the third-round shooting -2 to tie for 12th in the tournament.
Andres Thomas Castelblanco Salamanca was the next lowest scoring Warrior shooting +8 through three rounds. He started the tournament off strong shooting just +1 in the first round, but scores of +3 and +4 in the second and third rounds of play dropped the senior to a 27th-place finish.
Axel Vogt also had a strong start to the tournament, shooting just +1 in both the first and second rounds. However, he fell off quickly with an +11 performance in the third round of play leaving him +13 for the tournament and tied for 34th in the individual standings.
Layton Thomas rounded out the field for Sterling in his Warrior debut. He shot +20 through three rounds to finish 45th. He started the first day shooting +8 in round one and +6 in round two and finished off the tournament with another +6 performance in the third round of play.
With a young team, the Warriors look to build on a strong start to the season and will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28-29 at the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational hosted in Salina, Kan. at the Salina Country Club.
