YORK, Neb. – Sterling College Cheer finished fifth in the KCAC Cheer Championships on Saturday, March 14. The team scored in both prelims and finals with 0 deductions, scores of 76.47 and 78.93, respectively.

“We went into the KCAC Championship weekend with high hopes on where we would score. With Dog-House Classic a week before the Conference, we went into practices with pure determination to increase our scores and really wow the judges at the competition. I feel like we accomplished that and set a good standard for where Sterling College Cheer wants to be in the future seasons,” head coach Whitney Nightingale said.

Nightingale was also pleased with her team’s sportsmanship in and out of competition.

“I really enjoyed how my team has gone out of their way to make friends or involve everyone at competitions. Whether it be helping roll out/up mats or having dance breaks with other teams. My favorite part of being in the KCAC Cheer and Dance world is the friendships and the people you meet within the conference, and the support that each team has for each other,” she said.

Sophomore flyer Sheridan Nguyen earned KCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention for her performance throughout the year.

“Sheridan has been such a great addition to the team. Not only is she balancing schoolwork, but she is also participating in three sports (soccer, track, and cheer). With her tumbling, she has great advice for those working on improving their tumbling, while in general, increasing our scores with her amazing tumbling,” Nightingale said. “Everyone, including myself, has really appreciated that she continues to join us for competition season, and with this award, it just acknowledges her hard work.”

Nightingale is proud of how her team continually got better throughout the season and pushed themselves to improve and gained confidence. She really appreciated the team’s dedication and culture her athletes have created and looks forward to what Sterling College Cheer has in store for next season.

“Next season, I look forward to continuing to build our skills and proving that we can be competitive with other teams,” she said. “I look forward to bringing in the new members and finding new ways to have everyone shine within the performance. I am excited to see how the recruits will bring new energy to the team and how their skills will benefit the entire team. Although our season just ended, I am already looking forward to the next competitive season and how we can build upon the foundation we have just created.”
