Peggy Joan Counts, 67, lifelong resident of Burlington, Kansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, November 2, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Osawatomie, Kansas.

She was born on March 11, 1959, in Burlington, Kansas to Howard and Audrey (Leatherman) Hegg. She attended the Burlington schools.

Peggy was an over the road trucker for several years. Her CB Handle was Half Pint. She then worked as a waitress at Peggy Sue's at BETO Junction and she was a bus driver for the Burlington schools for over 29 years.

Peggy loved the time she spent with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Michael Howard; two sisters Betty Sayler and Kathleen "Kitty" Wright: and a nephew, Steven Dwight.

She is survived by her children; Daniel Tompkins (Amy), Nixa, MO, Heather Burke (Chris Krueger), Osawatomie, KS, and Derek Tompkins (Sarah Reid), Burlington; sisters Carolyn Crooks (Rick) and Cindy Dwight (Kenny); ten grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 P.M. Friday, November 20, 2026, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, KS.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Steven Dwight Scholarship at Burlington High School, (make payment to Burlington High School and if by check write Dwight Scholarship in the memo) or Good Shepherd Hospice, which may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
