Mary Lee (Roufs) Bronston
1953-2026

Mary Lee (Roufs) Bronston, 72, of Cheney, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 24, 1953, in North Dakota, Mary lived a spirited life rooted in family, filled with stories, and enriched by life’s simple pleasures. She married the love of her life, Stephen Bronston, and together they shared nearly 50 years and raised two daughters, Stephanie and Naomi. Mary enjoyed her years in California, where she worked at Toyama, before the family settled in Cheney in the late 1980s. She went on to work for the City of Cheney for 22 years, retiring in 2024. She treasured the familiarity of small-town life, but nothing meant more to her than being a mother—and, later, a grandmother. Affectionately known as “Mama Bear” and eventually “Grandma Bear,” Mary was fiercely protective of those she loved. She had strong opinions, liked things her way, and brought personality and conviction to everything she did. She could always be counted on for a wonderful story or a willing offer to dogsit. Her only grandchild, Bronston, held an especially cherished place in her heart. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen, and her youngest daughter, Naomi. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie, and son-in-law, Scott; her treasured grandson, Bronston. Mary’s siblings Kathy Hedahl, Carolyn Roufs, and Naomi Edwards and her “favorite brother,” Jim Roufs shared a close family bond. Mary will be remembered for her spirited nature, the stories she shared, and the fierce, enduring love she gave her family. A private memorial will be held with family.
