Lincoln, Neb. — The Bethany College men’s soccer team put together a dominant offensive performance Tuesday evening, defeating Union Adventist University, 6-1, in Lincoln, Neb.
The Swedes controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting Union Adventist 24-6 and putting 11 shots on target. Bethany’s defense also limited the Warriors to just three shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes.
The Swedes wasted little time finding the back of the net. Just three minutes into the match, Moses Behnam gave the Swedes an early 1-0 advantage, scoring from the edge of the box as the Swedes capitalized on a failed clearance.
The Swedes carried their one-goal lead into halftime before erupting in the second half.
Antonio Robles doubled the Swedes’ advantage in the 53rd minute, scoring just inside the box through a threaded pass from Richard Livingston to make it 2-0. Less than two minutes later, Livingston got in on the scoring and added another goal, extending Bethany’s lead to 3-0.
Livingston then scored his second of the match in the 61st minute, finding the back of the net on an effort from just outside the box and past the Union goalkeeper to push the advantage to 4-0.
The Swedes continued to apply pressure, and Brandon Gomez scored his second goal of the season in the 67th minute to make it 5-0, firing it straight through 3 Union players. Lukas Wiebe capped Bethany’s scoring in the 82nd minute with another goal late on.
Union Adventist managed to get on the scoreboard late when they scored a consolation goal in the 84th minute, but the Swedes comfortably held on for the 6-1 victory.
In goal, Nikoloz Chitaia played all 90 minutes for the Swedes, commanding his defense while making two saves on three Union Adventist shots on target.
Bethany’s defensive effort kept Union Adventist from generating sustained offensive pressure, while the Swedes’ 24 shots represented a significant advantage throughout the match.
