Barton will now turn its attention to the national stage, traveling to Hobbs, New Mexico, May 14–16 for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships held at Ross Black Field of Champions.
Positioning themselves for a title run throughout the meet, Barton entered the final event tied atop the team standings before an untimely injury during the 4x400m relay forced the Cougars to pull up mid-race, shifting the final outcome.
Despite the late setback, Barton’s performance was highlighted by five event titles, four runner-up finishes, and five personal best performances, including three program top-10 marks.
Leading the way, Jaylon Calder was named the meet’s Field Athlete of the Meet, marking the third consecutive year a Barton athlete has earned the honor. Calder backed the accolade with a dominant showing in the discus, capturing the title with a personal best 55.08m (180-08) to move into 10th on the program’s all-time list, continuing Barton’s three-year run atop the event.
On the sidelines, Barton’s leadership was equally recognized as head coach David Schenek was named Region 6 Men’s Coach of the Year, while Emmanuel Dixon earned Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
On the track, Barton produced a pair of hurdle champions as Nizer Smith claimed the 110m hurdles title in a personal best 14.17, while Trevoy Smith delivered one of the meet’s top performances in winning the 400m hurdles with a personal best and nation-leading 50.11, moving into second all-time in program history, trailing only Kenroy Williams’ 49.96 set in the 2019 season.
In the throws, Ilia Ciui added another victory in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.57m (195-05), while DeAndre Bristol captured the javelin title at 60.64m (198-11), giving the Cougars four event victories across the meet.
Barton’s sprint group delivered key scoring performances, led by LaMont Johnson‘s runner-up finish in the 400m with a personal best 45.91, moving into ninth all-time in program history. Simeon Adams followed in fourth (46.46) while Emmanuel Adams placed tenth (48.06). Trevoy Smith, Johnson, Taigon Peterkin, and Devonric Mack teamed up for the first time this season to place third in the 4x100m relay at 41.27.
